Germany has strongly criticised China’s growing assertiveness in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding waters, warning that such actions endanger global stability.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, speaking ahead of his visit to Japan and Indonesia on Sunday, said China’s behaviour threatens the principles that support peaceful international cooperation.

According to a statement released by his ministry, Wadephul described China’s conduct in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas as “increasingly aggressive” and said these tensions were not limited to Asia but had implications for Europe as well. He added that the strength of international law and binding rules must be defended collectively.

Before boarding his flight, Wadephul also praised Japan for standing in solidarity with Europe over the war in Ukraine and highlighted the economic and strategic significance of both Japan and Indonesia in strengthening international cooperation.

Earlier this week, China’s military said it tracked and forced away a U.S. destroyer near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The U.S. Navy said its mission followed international law.
