Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India’s largest shipbuilding facility, launched three technologically advanced vessels on 18 October 2025.

The newly launched vessels comprised an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) for the Indian Navy, a Hybrid Electric Methanol-Ready Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV), and India’s largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredger for the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI).

The ASW SWC, commissioned as INS Magdala, is the sixth vessel in an eight-ship series contracted by the Indian Navy in April 2019. The vessel measures 78 metres in length, weighs 896 tonnes, and can reach speeds of up to 25 knots. It is equipped with advanced underwater sensors, anti-submarine rockets, lightweight torpedoes, and mine-laying capability.

The craft is capable of conducting low-intensity maritime operations, coordinated anti-submarine missions with aircraft, and search and rescue operations in coastal waters. The new vessel will replace the Indian Navy’s ageing Abhay-class corvettes, enhancing near-shore anti-submarine capabilities with improved automation, manoeuvrability, and endurance.

The Hybrid Electric Methanol-Ready CSOV is India’s first vessel for offshore renewable energy. The vessel developed in collaboration with Norwegian firm Kongsberg Maritime is 93-metre-long and 19.6-metre-wide.

The CSOV is designed to support commissioning, installation, and maintenance of offshore wind turbines. It has hybrid-electric propulsion, methanol-ready engines, large lithium-ion batteries, dynamic positioning (DP2), and a motion-compensated gangway.

The vessel is also intended to serve as a “floating hotel” for offshore technicians, offering world-class comfort and safety standards in rough seas.

The DCI Dredge Godavari, developed jointly with Dutch company Royal IHC, is India’s largest and most advanced dredger. The dredger measures 127 metres in length and is capable of dredging up to 36 metres deep.

The 12,000-cubic-metre trailer suction hopper dredger is expected to significantly enhance India’s port deepening, land reclamation, and maintenance dredging capabilities.

CSL said the triple launch shows India’s engineering skills, focus on local manufacturing, and commitment to sustainable growth under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The launches take place ahead of India Maritime Week 2025, starting on 27 October in Mumbai.
