Klaipėda Port Advances Towards Becoming The Baltic’s First Green Hydrogen Hub

A significant milestone has been reached in the Klaipėda Port green hydrogen production project, which has no analogues in Lithuania or neighboring ports: the equipment has arrived at the site where the hydrogen station will be built.

The project developers have moved even closer to their goal following the successful completion of tests on the pipeline installed at the site.

“The arrival of this equipment marks an important step forward for Lithuania’s energy transition. Klaipėda Port is becoming the first port in the Baltic Sea region not only to talk about green energy, but to produce it and apply it in real operations.

This milestone opens new opportunities for our maritime sector and industry, and demonstrates that Klaipėda Port is ready to lead with cleaner, more sustainable and future-oriented solutions,” says Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

The green hydrogen production and supply station, which will start operating at Klaipėda Port next year, will house a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) type electrolyzer.

When operating at full capacity, about 127 tonnes of green hydrogen will be produced annually, part of which will be used to power the first vessel in the country driven by green hydrogen, currently nearing completion.

The project is being implemented under the Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan Next Generation Lithuania, funded by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery and resilience facility.

The total estimated cost of the hydrogen production and refueling station is approximately €12 million, with around €6 million financed by EU funds.
