Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. was the only Japanese shipping company to participate in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, held in Davos, Switzerland, from January 19- 23. This marks MOL’s fifth participation in the Davos Meeting.

Four MOL executives, including President & CEO Hashimoto, attended numerous key sessions covering cross industry initiatives aimed at addressing various challenges such as decarbonization, as well as global geopolitical issues. They also engaged in dialogue and exchanged views with political and business leaders from around the world.

On January 20, Hashimoto spoke at the official Davos program “Meeting of the First Movers Coalition Leaders.” With representatives of member companies of the First Movers Coalition (FMC,” note) gathered in one place, Hashimoto reaffirmed MOL’s commitment to its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and its intent to continue its initiatives toward that end. He also emphasized that achievement of decarbonization in international shipping-a truly global industry-will require the introduction of fair, effective, and internationally harmonized regulations is critically important.

On January 21, Senior Executive Officer Jotaro Tamura (scheduled to assume the position of President & CEO in April) served as a panelist at the Global Maritime Forum-hosted event “Trade Lanes to Tomorrow, Greening the Maritime Sector.” During discussions on decarbonization initiatives in the maritime industry, Tamura stated that “In addition to a rapid transition to full decarbonization, it is also important to adjust the pace of large-scale upstream investments and to adopt a transition strategy that combines lower carbon fuels such as LNG.”
