The Russian Navy has carried out large-scale military drills in the Sea of Japan this week, firing cruise and anti-ship missiles in a show of naval power.

According to the Russian defence ministry, the Pacific Fleet’s frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov launched Kalibr and Uran missiles during the exercise, which successfully struck their intended target.

The ministry added that the drills were not limited to warships and vessels but also involved naval aviation aircraft and drones.

Footage released by the ministry showed the frigate launching the missiles during the manoeuvres.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Japan is debating its long-standing “Three Non-Nuclear Principles,” which prohibit the country from producing, possessing, or hosting nuclear weapons.

Analysts say the debate shows changing security in the region as Russia, China, and North Korea increase their military activity.
