On Thursday, a South Korean Navy amphibious landing ship, the ROKS Hyang Ro Bong, caught fire.

Three crew members suffered injuries in the fire, which is said to have started in the machinery space.

Around 1549 hours, the ship caught fire while transiting into a naval base in the Jinhae District, west of Busan.

The fire began due to issues in one of the auxiliary engines.

180 people were rescued from the ship for safety when it arrived at the pier at 1810 hours, and several responders reached out to aid in the firefighting effort along with fire trucks and fireboats.

One of the ship’s crew members sustained first and second-degree burns from the fire and was taken to a hospital. The other two crew members complained of difficulties in breathing. They are recovering after receiving medical care.

ROKS Hyang Ro Bong is a 1,700 DWT tank landing craft commissioned in 1999.
