Tunisia Calls Attack On Gaza-Bound Aid Ship “Orchestrated”

Tunisian authorities said on Wednesday that the attack on a Gaza-bound aid ship at Sidi Bou Said port appeared to be “orchestrated.” The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which is preparing to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, reported that one of its boats was hit by a drone. This marks the second strike in two days, which organisers described as deliberate attempts to disrupt the mission.

There were no injuries in the attack. Civil protection teams in Tunisia quickly controlled a fire that broke out on the affected boat on Wednesday night. The Tunisian Interior Ministry said it is investigating the incident but did not name any party or country as responsible.

The United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, reportedly called the attack “an assault against Tunisian sovereignty.”

On Wednesday, thousands of Tunisians gathered at the Sidi Bou Said beach to show support for the pro-Palestinian activists and the flotilla, which includes hundreds of participants and dozens of boats. The convoy has delegations from 44 countries, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Portuguese left-wing politician Mariana Mortagua.

The flotilla aims to break Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza. Israel has enforced the blockade since Hamas seized control of the coastal enclave in 2007, citing security concerns and the prevention of weapons smuggling.

The blockade has continued during the ongoing conflict, which started after Hamas attacked southern Israel in October 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

Israel’s military response in Gaza has reportedly killed more than 64,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. A global hunger monitor has also reported that parts of the enclave are experiencing famine.

Despite the drone attacks and tense security situation, the Global Sumud Flotilla continues preparations to sail to Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged population.
