WISTA Norway Supports the Maritime Industry’s Commitment to Improving Workplace Culture

While challenges remain, industry stakeholders are taking action to foster respect, inclusion and professionalism in the workplace.

The maritime industry is built on collaboration and professionalism. Yet like many sectors, it faces challenges in ensuring workplaces are safe and inclusive for all. WISTA Norway acknowledges that while the majority of professionals uphold strong values, there is still work to be done.

We do not claim the industry is free from issues such as harassment or exclusion. These concerns exist across many sectors, and maritime is no exception. What matters is how we respond – and the industry is responding.

Industry stakeholders, such as shipowners and suppliers, together with the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association and organizations like WISTA Norway, are actively working to strengthen workplace culture and set clear expectations for conduct.

WISTA Norway’s “40 by 30 Initiative“ (a campaign to encourage companies to increase the share of women in leading positions by 40% within 2030), provides practical tools for managers to build respectful, high-performing workplaces. Through guidelines, mentoring, and leadership resources, we help organizations create environments where talent – regardless of gender – can thrive.

Change is underway, but it requires continued commitment. Together, we can ensure maritime remains a place where professionalism and inclusivity are the norm.
