The world’s first renewable ammonia-powered container ship, Yara Eyde, has officially entered construction with a steel-cutting ceremony.

Yara Clean Ammonia, recognised as the largest global shipper and trader of ammonia, hosted the event to celebrate the milestone that marks the beginning of the vessel’s build.

The project is designed to demonstrate the potential of ammonia as a low-emission fuel and change the future of short-sea shipping. Once completed, Yara Eyde will operate on the Oslo–Porsgrunn–Bremerhaven–Rotterdam route.

The ship will connect important industrial hubs in Northern Europe, offering sustainable maritime logistics while reducing emissions and maintaining efficient trade flows.

Yara Clean Ammonia explained that the ship is not just another addition to the fleet but a step forward in maritime decarbonisation.

The company’s CEO, Hans Olav Raen, said the start of construction marks a new chapter for shipping and reflects the company’s goal of making low-emission ammonia a practical solution. He added that Yara also hopes to inspire others to adopt cleaner technologies.

North Sea Container Line, a partner in the project, also stressed the importance of this step. Its CEO, Bente Hetland, said the Yara Eyde proves how cooperation across the value chain can bring advanced technology into real use. She added that the ship will benefit cargo owners and customers by being both competitive and sustainable.
