The Port of Gothenburg has taken another step in its long-term expansion, securing land in its outer harbour area to support future growth.
The deal, agreed with listed property company Platzer, covers land, office buildings and water areas, and has a total transaction value of SEK 684m ($71.5m), including the sale of a smaller logistics property at the port entrance.
The acquisition opens up the potential for around 210,000 sq m of new terminal space, giving Scandinavia’s largest port room to expand alongside its existing operations and logistics network.
Port chief executive Göran Eriksson said the move was a natural next step as volumes continue to grow.
“We are seeing steady volume growth over time, and to support the global competitiveness of Swedish industry, continuous development of the port is required,” he said.
The deal continues a steady westward expansion that has been underway for decades. Development in the area dates back to the 1970s with the construction of the Älvsborg roro terminal, followed by further additions, including the Arendal 2 project.
The newly acquired land sits next to ongoing works on Stena Line’s new ferry terminal, which is due for completion in 2031, further strengthening the area as a key logistics hub.
Revenue from existing office buildings on the site is expected to help fund future development, while detailed plans for the area will be drawn up once the transaction is finalised.
The port, which handles around 20% of Sweden’s trade and more than half of its container traffic, noted that the deal remains subject to approval by the municipal council, with ownership transfer expected no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2026.
