HJ Shipbuilding wins 11,000-TEU orders in Korea, boosts eco-friendly fleet

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said on the 27th it won an order from a European shipowner for two 11,000-TEU (1 TEU is one 20-foot container) container ships for 357.2 billion won.

The 11,000-TEU container ship is the largest that can be built at the Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, based on HJ Shipbuilding & Construction’s self-developed eco-friendly 7,700- to 9,000-TEU container ship. On Feb. it first won an order for two vessels, and this time secured two additional vessels.
The newly ordered vessels are also eco-friendly container carriers that minimize greenhouse gas emissions and will be equipped with scrubbers, a desulfurization system to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental rules.

In addition, an alternative maritime power (AMP) system will be installed so the ship can shut down engines that cause air pollution while berthed and receive the necessary electricity from shore.

With construction volume secured for four 11,000-TEU container ships, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction is now positioned to benefit from repeat builds. When a shipyard continuously builds the same main ship type, design, procurement and process efficiency improve, boosting productivity and profitability. For shipowners, building sister ships also offers many advantages in operation and management, making them highly preferred.

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said it has also completed development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel propulsion model of the same hull form as the vessels ordered this time, preparing to meet shipowner demands.

Yu Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, said, “With eco-friendly container ships and a high-efficiency design and production system in place, we can now consecutively build four 10,000-TEU large container ships at the Yeongdo Shipyard,” adding, “We will pursue a selective order strategy focused on profitability and further enhance competitiveness by delivering high-quality ships on time.”
