Australia confirms August 2026 start for maiden offshore wind tender

The Australian government has decided to press on with the country’s first offshore wind auction in the state of Victoria.

Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio said that Victoria’s first offshore wind industry auction will open in August 2026 for an initial 2GW of capacity.

In December, Australian authorities provided in-principle support for the Electricity Services Entry Mechanism, which provides a pathway for new renewable energy projects, including offshore wind, to help Victoria meet its renewable energy targets.

According to the government, Victoria has some of the best offshore wind resources in the world. If developed, it will further diversify and stabilise the state’s power supply, helping to meet demand as its ageing coal-fired generators retire.

It is also expected that the offshore wind industry is expected to create over 6,000 jobs and generate billions in investment.

“We want to give industry the certainty it needs to invest and help us keep building the renewable energy Victoria needs to push down energy bills. We’re working closely with developers on the progress of this exciting auction to ensure strong competition to secure the best projects and best value for Victorians,” said Lily D’Ambrosio, Victoria’s Minister for Energy and Resources.
